Carpinteria Birdwatching Classes

Great news, Carpinteria bird friends! Rob Denholtz, founder and long-time organizer of the Carpinteria Christmas Bird Count, has arranged for us to use the clubhouse at Silver Sands Mobile Home park for our birdwatching classes. It’s a little cozier than our old home at the Veterans Hall, but I’m sure we’ll be fine.

Classes will be free of charge, and will be held on the third Wednesday of each month (usually) at 7 p.m.

My current plan is that we’ll also do a low-key birdwatching outing somewhere around Carpinteria on the Saturday after each class.

Class Details:

  • When: Wednesday, February 21, 2018, 7pm
  • Where: Silver Sands Mobile Home Park, 349 Ash Ave, Carpinteria
  • Subject: The Carpinteria Christmas Bird Count and the Thomas Fire; Birds of the Chaparral

Take Linden Avenue south toward the beach. After you cross the railroad tracks, turn right on Dorrance Way. At the end of the street, where it meets Ash Avenue, park along Ash Avenue in front of the Silver Sands Mobile Home Park. Overflow parking is also available to the south (left) along Ash Avenue.

Walk into the mobile home park by the south (left) driveway. The clubhouse is the first building on your left. (See below; click for larger map.)

Outing Details:

The first outing of the year will be along the lower portion of the Franklin Trail, birding from the area near Carpinteria High School up to the beginning of the Thomas Fire burn area and back again.

  • When: Saturday, February 24, 2018, 8am
  • Where: Franklin Trail trailhead, Carpinteria High School, 4810 Foothill Rd, Carpinteria
  • Directions: Park in the “Faculty” parking lot at Carpinteria High School (should be fine on a Saturday). Meet at the trailhead next to the parking lot. I plan to hike only the lower portion of the trail, so distance and elevation gain should be minimal.

Things to bring:

  • Binoculars (if you have them)
  • Clothing and footwear suitable for hiking
  • Sun protection
  • Water
